wayne lapierre wrote an op-ed and he said, hurricanes, tornadoes, riots, these are perils we're sure to face, it's not just paranoia to buy a gun. it's survival. isn't that also using emotion? >> back during katrina, when there was lawlessness in new orleans and around there, authorities tried to take away everyone's firearms. we had to go to court to get those removed and prohibit the government from doing that in times of emergency. we all hope we don't come to the situation where we have something like katrina that breaks down all law enforcement. we all hope that none of us are attacked by an armed intruder, that no one who runs a small business is robbed, that no woman is raped, but those things happ happen. what i was objecting to was the rush to pass legislation without really debating it or looking into it. there are ways to deal with the things he wanted to deal with, but by just writing something in the dark of night and ramming it through a legislature and signing it is not a good way to develop policy in a democratic society. >> i agree with you that a debate is necessary
